Understand the refrigerant Gas
What is a refrigerant?
A fluid which serves as a medium of transferring heat from the space is to be cooled to some other place.
For what purpose a refrigerant is used in a refrigerating machine?
For producing low temperature in the evaporator of a refrigerating machine.
How does a refrigerant produce cooling in the evaporator?
The liquid refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator by taking the latent heat from the adjoinings and causes cooling.
What desirable properties should a refrigerant possess?
- It should be non poisonous.
- It should be non-explosive.
- It should be non-flammable.
- It should be non toxic.
- It should be non corrosive to metal.
- It should have low boiling point.
- It should be easy to liquefy at moderate temperature and pressure.
- It should operate on positive pressure.
- It should have high latent heat value.
- It should be easy to detect.
- It should be well mixable with oil.
- It should have no effect on moisture.
- Its freezing point should be lower than any temperature to be maintained in the refrigerating system.
- It should be able to withstand operating temperatures and pressures.
- The volume of the refrigerant vapour should be as small as possible. It enables to use smaller size machinery.
- The difference between evaporating and condensing pressure should be less.
- Its thermal conductivity should be more.
- It should have electrical resistance to prevent electrical short.
- Its cost should be low.
- It should be easily available.
What are the types of refrigerant?
There are two main types of refrigerants. 1. Primary refrigerants. 2. Secondary refrigerants.
Primary refrigerants
These are those refrigerants which cool the substance directly by absorbing latent heat. These refrigerants like Ammonia, Sulphur dioxide, Carbon dioxide and Freon are used in standard compression system.
Secondary refrigerants
These are those refrigerants or brines which are used as an intermediate fluid between the evaporator and the substance to be cooled. They cool the substance by absorbing their sensible heat. Calcium chloride and sodium chloride are the common brine for this purpose.
